I earlier shared a reading from Glen Mitchell and, in the passing of John Prine, will do so again. Prine has been a resilient voice for peace and truth. You can find any number of his songs onYouTube. Let his lyrics be a balm for you soul as the week goes on. Let your heart and mind stay open as the Spirit addresses us in the midst of this pandemic. Blessings! Pastor Steve
Prayers for John Prine I learned early yesterday that singer/songwriter John Prine was hospitalized with COVID-19. I’ve been fed by his songs for 46 years and it was easy to pray for him through the day, the house shaking with the life that his lyrics embody. John Prine’s songs create a home for sadness even as they reach for the depth of what it means to be human. His sense of irony finally rests in a bedrock of hope, allowing him to address the toughest topics with a truth that in the end inspires life and more than a little laughter. His most recent albumThe Tree of Forgiveness, fearlessly takes death on and in the last cut he’s entering heaven: When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band... My prayers for John found their rest yesterday in these words from another song on that album entitled, “Boundless Love.” My prayer for him in these lyrics was not other than his prayer for all of us:
If by chance I should find myself at risk Of falling from this jagged cliff I look below and I look above I'm surrounded by your boundless love
Surround me with your boundless love Confound me with your boundless love I was drowning in a sea, lost as I could be When you found me with your boundless love You dumbfound me with your boundless love You surround me with your boundless love Thank you, John. Love and Peace, Glenn
